Sign Up – In-Person (Calgary) Participation – VIRTUAL REALITY RESEARCH STUDY – Gender & Sexuality

This is the Second Step to sign up for the In-Person VR Research Study. If you missed the First Step, please go back. If you submitted a question during the First Step, you will receive an email response from Dylan Paré soon.

Thank you for your interest in participating in the research study “Agents, Virtuality, and Learning about Gender and Sexuality.” The location of the study is at the University of Calgary.

The University of Calgary Conjoint Faculties Research Ethics Board has approved this study (REB19-1459).

Our research team has designed a virtual reality experience that explores gender and sexuality-based marginalization. The experience illustrates how structural (macro-level) inequalities, such as the marginalization of LGBTQ+ people, arise through dynamic, individual-level interactions between individuals, groups, and institutions. The design is an immersive, computer-generated virtual world that uses VR to explore gender and sexuality through interactions with LGBTQ+ narratives.

If you are willing, we’d like to invite you to participate in this exhibit. You will wear an Oculus Rift virtual reality head-mounted display to enter into a computer-generated, virtual reality environment. You will interact with the environment which includes touching virtual objects and listening to queer and trans narratives.

We are interested in seeing how you interact with the virtual world and how you are making sense of the simulation as you are talking with the facilitator. As you participate in the virtual reality application, we would like to document your interactions with the virtual environment and with the facilitator. This includes video and audio recording what you are saying and doing in the virtual environment and including you in hand-written field notes that we write about what we observe.

Participation is entirely voluntary, and we will not be showing these videos to anyone outside of the research team. A copy of the full consent form will be provided to you, and you will have the opportunity to read it, ask questions, and get clarifications before agreeing to be part of the research. We will review and discuss the consent form and obtain your full consent to participate in the research before starting the research.

We believe that your participation in our research study will lead to exciting insights. If you are still interested in participating, please reply to this email by choosing a time to meet using this Calendly booking link:

If none of the times available work with your schedule, please email the research coordinator at to arrange an alternate time.

Kind Regards,
